What is BSPT Thread?

British Standard Pipe Tapered (BSPT) is a type of pipe thread used in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries. It is a tapered thread, which means that the diameter of the thread gets larger or smaller as it goes along the length of the pipe. This taper helps to create a tight seal when two BSPT threads are screwed together.

What are BSPT threads?

  • BSPT stands for British Standard Pipe Tapered thread.
  • It’s a type of screw thread commonly used in plumbing and pipefitting applications worldwide, particularly in the UK, Europe, and Asia.
  • It features a tapered design, meaning the diameter of the thread gradually increases or decreases along its length.
  • This tapered shape creates a tight seal when two BSPT fittings are joined together, making it suitable for fluids and gases.

Key characteristics:

  • Taper: 1 in 16 (meaning the diameter changes by 1 unit over a length of 16 units)
  • Thread angle: 55 degrees
  • Designation: “R” or “Rp” for external threads, “Rc” for internal threads (though female Rc threads are less common)
  • Sealing: Achieved through thread interference and sealants like PTFE tape or pipe dope

Although the BSPT male end is comparable to the National Pipe Tapered Fuel (NPTF), they are not interchangeable, due to their different size and thread form.
